Light from the Word and through the lens

John 6:35-40

35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Not hunger? Never thirst? Is this anyone’s experience? Really?!? I’m sure there are some who live so fully for Jesus and so concern themselves with the implications of their faith in him that they have no hunger, and never thirst. But most of us never experience this for a far different reason. We stuff ourselves – not only on Thanksgiving, but any other time we care to. We hardly ever need an excuse; and we seldom feel the pangs of hunger.

But Jesus promises that when we come to him and believe in him, he will fill our hearts and souls so that we never hunger or thirst. Perhaps we would experience that more fully if we let go of our Epicurean pursuits and endless quest to fill our hearts with food, fun, excitement, and anything other than Jesus.

Feasting is a proper response to victory and celebration. But as a way of life it devolves into a shallow and futile pursuit. Perhaps we would do better to fast more often and find our true satisfaction in Jesus. At least that’s the thought I’m going to try to hold in my heart this post-Thanksgiving season.
