Light from the Word and through the lens

John 18:37-38

Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, ”You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

What purpose does this serve? Why am I going through this? These questions arise when people struggle with on-going, chronic illness, or difficult, long-term life challenges. It is comforting to realize that there is a purpose for us in the face of such suffering. But these questions ought not be reserved for times of suffering and difficulty; they are good questions for us each day.

Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world, yet he was there, in this world, before Pilate. So why was he there? What was his purpose? Jesus’ own answer: to bear witness to the truth. Jesus was the embodiment of grace bearing witness to the truth.

If we are to live up to our purpose, we must understand that such is our calling, that we are here to embody grace and witness to the truth. God could – if it would please him – take each of us immediately to heaven, the moment we were converted to the faith. Sometimes, in fact, that might be an appealing thought. But the means by which the Good News of Jesus is shared, and people are brought to faith would soon be gone. For the faith is passed from one generation to another by means of people sharing that faith one person to another. What purpose does your life serve? Why are you going through these things? To embody grace and give witness to the truth. That’s Jesus’ example and our calling as long as God gives us life in this world.
