Light from the Word and through the lens

John 17:15-16

[Jesus is praying…] “I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.”

We’ve been traveling again – “So what else is new?” you ask. As soon as we landed at the Houston airport, I “Checked In” on FaceBook, and added the word “Home!” It does feel good to be back home. I like my spot on the sofa with my computer on my lap/knee desk. I like my own coffee maker. I like my own bed!

Only problem is, I’m not really home – neither are you if you’re reading this. Jesus says of his disciples, “They are not of the world.” That means that no matter how comfortable our home may be, and how happy we may be to be home, this isn’t the place where our hearts will find rest. That is yet to come.

I do prefer the warm comfort of my living room over the sterile – though sometimes beautiful – accoutrements of the nicest hotel accommodations. But even the most opulent penthouse has nothing over the mansions of eternity that Jesus is preparing for his followers. So while we may wish to make ourselves comfortable, we might need also to remember not to get too comfortable here, lest we lose sight of a higher calling and greater blessing that God has in store for us. That would delight the evil one to no end.

Thank God Jesus prayed for us so we would not lose sight of his greater blessings and truer destiny.
