Light from the Word and through the lens

John 20:15

Jesus said to [Mary], “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

Mary is at Jesus’ borrowed tomb early on Easter Sunday morning. Jesus’ body is missing. Angels (unrecognized as such by Mary) are in the tomb sitting (!) where Jesus head and feet had been. This is a borrowed tomb. Perhaps Mary thought that the owner had changed his mind. Maybe he had simply had the body dumped somewhere. The horror of seeing Jesus die on a cross (a most humiliating form of punishment and death) has now been compounded by the shame of a naked body being dumped who knows where. Or worse yet Jesus’ enemies may now have come to claim the body and make a further mockery of her Lord.

When she turns around and encounters Jesus she does not know who he is. From the depth of her grief, shock – and with a sliver of hope that he might know – she asks where he has taken the body. She would take the body and find another place for it. After all, Jesus’ body belongs somewhere.

Mary realizes something that we all might keep in mind: Jesus belongs somewhere where we who love him may show him and any who would see us the respect that he deserves. We know that it’s not in a tomb. It is in our hearts. And just as Mary’s (misguided) desire to care for Jesus’ body shows her devotion and love, so perhaps might we seek to honor Jesus in all things.

The good news is that Jesus is alive – he needs no tomb for his keeping. He lives and reigns in heaven. He knows and calls us by name. He belongs in our hearts.
