Light from the Word and through the lens

Read John 19:1-11

Jesus answered [Pilate], “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

Reaching for the Sun

There are two people in this encounter who each have authority. Pilate supposes that he has authority over Jesus in this situation. But he does not. In his willful dismissal of Jesus, and refusal to acknowledge Jesus as Lord, he has become a pawn in the hand of God. He has only that authority which will serve God’s purposes.

Jesus, on the other hand, has true and ultimate authority because he has submitted himself to the will of the Father, and because he is the Son of the King of kings.

We can push and shove our way through life, seeking our own advantage and ignoring God’s ultimate authority. Or we can seek God’s kingdom and live under His ultimate authority. When we live as children of God, children of the King of kings, we have ultimate authority. And no matter what may happen to us in the short term, we will win the ultimate victory. That’s faith. That’s living under the authority that gives us power over Satan and all his evil and dark ways.
