John 16:13-15
[Jesus says,] “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

John records more of Jesus’ teaching on the work of the Holy Spirit than any other Gospel. In chapter three he tells Nicodemus that the wind blows where it will. In John 14 he speaks of the “Counselor”. Here Jesus speaks about the Spirit’s work to glorify Jesus by declare the truths of Jesus to the disciples. In another place he promises that the Spirit will bring to the mind of the disciples all that Jesus taught – a great comfort to us who read their writings two thousand years later.
While I have no argument with those more exuberant in their display of the Holy Spirit’s activity in their lives, I do note Jesus’ words here: “He will glorify me”. The greatest work of the Holy Spirit is to focus attention on Jesus and help us to see him for who he is: the Son of God, our Savior, servant and Lord.
The Spirit’s great work is to bring us to faith and keep us in that faith in Jesus. In faith we obey his commands (“love one another, cf. John 15:12). Then the Holy Spirit has truly done his work.
