Light from the Word and through the lens

John 15:26-27

[Jesus said,] “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.”

The presence of the Holy Spirit will point us to Jesus. That’s what the Holy Spirit does: he bears witness to Jesus. He focuses our attention on who Jesus is, what he did, what he promised, and the truth about God that he embodied.

We may be led sometimes to believe that the Holy Spirit’s presence is to be shown in extraordinary displays of profuse joy, exuberant praise, or ecstatic utterance. While those manifestations may be produced by the presence of the Holy Spirit, Jesus says that the certain evidence of the Spirit’s presence is that we are pointed to Jesus.

If, therefore, we have been pointed toward Jesus, by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we must point others to Jesus. For we have learned about him, and we have been with him through his word.
