Light from the Word and through the lens

John 13:31-35

When he had gone out, Jesus said,”Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

There are many things Jesus did and taught during his earthly life and ministry. Some are unique to him (walking on water comes to mind!). Others are to be descriptive of all of his followers. We are all commanded to pray to God, our heavenly father. We must all testify to the truth. But here Jesus says that the touchstone of authenticity for his disciples is that we love one another.

“By this shall all men know that you are my disciples,” Jesus says, ” that you love one another.” Our preaching, praying, or religious activities may be good and even important. But the one thing that Jesus lifts up as identifying his followers is our love for one another. Who today especially needs God’s love shown to them by you? How are you doing in showing this essential proof of discipleship?
