John 7:37-39
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Jesus says that those who believe in him will refresh others by the Holy Spirit’s outflow from their being. This is a remarkable reality that we more often think of in the reverse. We think of the Holy Spirit coming to us and refreshing us. We think of the blessing and favor of God’s presence in our lives.
The fruit of the Spirit, after all, is love, joy, peace, patience, goodness and so forth. Those we think of often as internal states. We are at peace. We have joy in our hearts. We are patient. We embrace the love of Christ.
But in these words, Jesus makes a remarkable claim about himself by saying that we who believe in him will be not only a repository, but a source of the Spirit’s blessing and favor to others. Now the question for us to ask: Is the Spirit flowing from me into the lives of others – refreshing others with the living water of Jesus?
