Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 22:1-2

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

If you have read Psalm 22 you will already have seen that there are several references to a cruel treatment that we know today as crucifixion. The Psalm was written about 1000 years before Jesus, and before such a cruel means of tortuous execution is known to have been employed. But these words so clearly describe the suffering of Jesus as he was crucified. He even quotes them from the cross!

This is the ultimate sacrifice: The one who has done no wrong suffers for the sake of those who have done wrong, so that we may receive God’s kindness and Jesus’ righteousness.

Today is Good Friday. It is good for all who have sinned, and for those who take refuge in Jesus’ suffering and death for them. Where do you belong in this story? Join me at the foot of the cross, repenting of our sin, and rejoicing in our salvation!
