Exodus 20:14
You shall not commit adultery.

It’s a lost art: sexual decency, faithfulness, and purity. And while it’s only anecdotal evidence, my experience of people coming to me to be married provides a sad commentary on our obedience to this commandment. Fewer and fewer young couples come to me to be married, while clearly expressing the value and practice of celibacy prior to marriage. More and more couples are living together. Many admit to sexual intimacy.
What is even more sad has little to do with merely breaking the commandment. Some people will stare me in the eye and defend their actions. They’ll suggest excuses ranging from financial issues to loneliness, to mere convenience.
What usually happens when I walk down the road of honesty, however, is an admission: most know it’s wrong. Some will even call it “living in sin.” A powerful image for many in regard to this command has to do with “becoming one” in the act of sexual intimacy. When that oneness is split apart, it causes emotional scaring.
God calls all people to repent, of our sin against this commandment; whether by sins of thought, word, or deed we’re all guilty. It is a joy to know that for Jesus’ sake our sins – even of adultery – have been forgiven.
Perhaps you have experienced such emotional scaring. The balm of the gospel provides healing and hope for any who would turn to Christ. Sincere repentance forms the foundation for a life of freedom and joy by God’s grace. That’s an art that the Holy Spirit will help us all rediscover.
