Light from the Word and through the lens

Exodus 20:12

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

This commandment is a challenging invitation. On the one hand it is a challenge to teach your children to honor you. Anyone with a child more than 18 months old realizes this! But this is also an invitation. Teach your children this vital truth: no one loves them more than you do – other than their heavenly Father! If somehow you are able to convince them of that, you will have gone many miles toward helping them to honor you.

Such honor is not about personal vindication, or self-serving affirmation. True honor of father and mother is about holding to them as God’s gifts, and learning from them about God’s love and calling. It’s about unconditional love and challenging responsibility as his children.

These commandments are for our good to be sure. But they are also for the purpose of honoring God. When we teach our children of God’s love and ours, and of his commands and our rules, we are teaching them to honor us. That is a high calling and a great privilege.
