Light from the Word and through the lens

Moses’ father-in-law was priest of Midian; a pagan priest. And following Moses’ triumph in leading the children of Israel out of Egypt, this pagan priest makes a startling statement: “Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods.” Up until that time it was up for grabs: Who is the greatest god? There were many contenders.
But the score is settled in Jethro’s mind when Moses tells him the story of the LORD’s deliverance of the Hebrews from Egypt. It was dramatic to be sure. It was decisive. It was an upset of epic proportions. An enslaved nation is brought out of slavery and the mighty army of Egypt is wiped out in a show of divine power and intervention.
Who gets the credit? Not Moses. Not the stupidity or frenzied anger of Pharaoh. The LORD gets the credit. And Jethro confesses that the LORD is the greatest god of all.
In those days peoples and nations named their gods: Re, Baal, or any other number of names were given the man-made deities who supposedly controlled weather, crops, sun, moon, and the affairs of men.
Today we don’t admit that money, fame, science, nature, or fun are our gods. But we build huge cathedrals to them: banks, concert stages, and amusement parks. We take pilgrimages in the form of safaris or cross-country excursions to experience their blessing.
If the LORD truly is the greatest god of all, surely we need to confess that wherever we go. We who call him LORD must speak and act as though these other pursuits – from concerts to safaris – are to be lived out under him.
An even greater rescue and victory has been won for us: our sins have been forgiven. He has triumphed over sin and death. The Lord Jesus is truly the greatest god of all. That’s not up for grabs. How will I live that out today?
