Read Exodus 10:1-11
Some leaders never back down. Never give in. Never learn. Pharaoh was such a leader. Seven times previous to this encounter God has shown his power over all of Egypt and its people. Seven times Pharaoh has refused to repent and humble himself before the King of the Universe.
Surely the threat of locusts consuming the land would strike fear in Pharaoh’s heart. Locusts destroy and devour. The prospect of having the land covered, the trees and crops devoured, and their houses filled locusts would give most people pause. This is way beyond being solved by grabbing a can of Raid ®!
Sadly Pharaoh refuses even to listen to his advisers who urge him to let Moses and his people go. They realize the danger and see Moses and Israel as a threat and a pestilence to be gotten rid of. But Pharaoh won’t let Israel go. He offers only a token concession: “Take the men and go.” He doesn’t blink.
The New Testament calls believers to, “Humble yourselves “under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” (1 Peter 5:6). The purpose of God’s call to repentance is not only to chastise the willful evil-doer, but to give life and salvation to all.
But in the face of willful refusal to repent and acknowledge God’s authority over all things and people, God will prevail. He can hold a stare longer than any human, and in the end he will prevail over every evil person and intent. What a joy it is for us to receive the blessings of his favor as we acknowledge his glory and confess that he is the Lord!
