Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 21:14-17
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?” 17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

It is clear that Jesus was not welcome in Jerusalem. The Jewish leaders constantly criticized him. The Pharisees and scribes found fault at every turn. So Jesus departs and goes to Bethany. Not obvious here is the fact that Mary and Martha and Lazarus live in Bethany. It is safe to assume that Jesus stayed with them there. No other persons in Bethany are mentioned in the Gospels. Jesus is there on at least two other occasions. They were friends.

Where does Jesus stay today? He has promised to be “with us always, to the end of the world.” He lives in our hearts by faith, and will remain where he is welcomed.

Sometimes our actions betray a desire in us for Jesus’ absence; whenever we sin we are saying we don’t want him in our hearts. That’s why daily repentance for sin and continued renewal of our faith in Jesus is so important. This is not a one-time “get saved” event! It is the daily calling for all those in whom Jesus lives. Thankfully he considers himself welcome in the heart of all who repent and believe the good news.
