Psalm 99
1 The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! 2 The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. 3 Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he! 4 The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!
The message of God's reign is often greeted by God's people as particularly good news. The implication is that because God reigns over all things, he will ultimately put down evil and establish righteousness. When we are oppressed, or when we yearn for justice because our situation is dire, we want justice and God's rule.
When, however, we are satisfied with life and things are going our way, we may not feel the need for God's reign over us. In fact we may want God to leave us alone. We may even think of him as getting in the way of our fun.
But any true encounter with God will bring with it at least a measure of fear. Evil has no standing in his presence. We cannot rule our own lives; we are not the masters of our own fate. God reigns over all.
When we lose sight of that we may simply need to be reminded by means of this Psalm (or any other). But that truth is cause for joy and fear. Indeed, while we yearn for justice, such justice will require a change in our hearts. We must constantly "repent and believe the Good News" (Mark 1:14-15). We must acknowledge God's reign over all and give him the glory that is truly his. That is ultimately Good News, for God's reign is in the hearts of all those who claim Jesus as Lord, knowing that he has won our salvation, and that we can truly LIVE under him in his kingdom – a life of fullness and abundance.
The Lord reigns! May his name forever be praised!
