Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 1 is a keeper. Not only is it a great psalm, worth reading, marking, meditating on, and memorizing; it is worth emulating, striving for: keeping.

Psalm 1 [ESV]

1Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers. 4The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

The psalmist speaks here of living: walking, standing, sitting, delighting. This is speaking about who we connect with, who we interact with, and who we cooperate with. These things matter. This is not speaking about merely being polite or respectful toward persons who scoff and sin. It is not speaking about being in the world, per se. We are in the world; Jesus says as much in John 17:14-16.

But the Psalm speaks about how we relate to those whose intent is evil and who plot harm for others. He is speaking about a way of life that is not given toward evil pursuits. Such a person will stand in the end. Such a person will flourish in his life. Such a person will be refreshed by God’s word. Such a person is blessed.

Today is a good day to be blessed by God: avoiding conspiring toward evil purposes, and drinking deeply from the refreshment of God’s word.
