On retreat today for prayer and sermon planning, I decided to depart from Matthew and look at the Psalms for today (Psalm 29; 59; 89; 149 {leaving Psalm 119 for the 31st day of the month}) Well and good. But how do we do this thing that God calls us to do? How do we ascribe to God the glory due his name?
Psalm 29
1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. 11 May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
For me it is quite clear: there are many things I could get excited about. There are many things that call for my attention, praise, and devotion. Whatever is of this world, however, will soon rust or decay. Cedars will be broken. Forests stripped bare. Deer will continue to give birth. Nations will posture before him.
There is a place, however, where God’s glory is acknowledged. There are those who shout “Glory!” I will add my voice today to those who recognize his reign over all. His is the kingdom, the power and the glory. When we ascribe these to him, we are doing him no favor. We are, however, doing the good thing he calls us to do.
And to live under him in his kingdom is to live in eternal peace. Glory be to God!
