Anyone who knows me knows that I’m pretty jazzed about our new building program at St. John. I do realize that Jesus told the disciples that the temple in Jerusalem would be completely destroyed, “not one stone will be left on another.” (Mark 13:2) He is speaking about the most important religious building for the Jewish people of his day!

Matthew 16:17-18 (ESV)
And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
I realize that the only building that will last forever is the Church: not a building, but the sum total of all those who believe in Jesus Christ in heaven and on earth. We join that whole company of saints on earth and in heaven when we gather for worship. Many of the beautiful church buildings in Europe are little more than museums today; we saw several such museums on our tour in Germany this year. Buildings can become all-consuming; they can eat up resources, limit ministry, and become more important than the people who they serve.
But just as your checkbook can more clearly display your value system than anything else, so a church building can be an expression of a church’s mission-mindedness. Just as what you spend your money on reveals where your values are, so the design, size, and physical condition of a church building reveals what a church values – toward God and toward the community.
So I am jazzed about our building program. I hope it expresses two very important values and helps with a third. I hope it expresses our value that God is greatly to be praised. In public gatherings, with songs, hymns, spiritual songs, Scripture and sacraments. I hope it says to the community, “We have a place for you – just as Jesus has a place for you in his heart.” And I hope that many people will use the building as a launch pad into the community to Live and Share the Abundant Life of Jesus. (That’s our Mission Statement.)
We are building a worship center designed to last many generations into the future – until Jesus returns. When he returns we will rejoice in the new heaven and earth that will be God’s dwelling; this and all buildings on earth will be destroyed. But in the mean time, let this one stand as a reminder of God’s grace and goodness, and a call for us to confess Jesus as Messiah and Lord.
