Light from the Word and through the lens

I think it is a good thing that the churches were filled with people the week after 9/11. I think it is not so good that they were “back to normal” by two or three weeks.

Romans 10:13 says, “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Indeed faith alone saves us. But faith is never alone. And simply to call out the name Jesus isn’t necessarily faith. It may be faith. And that’s enough – even in our dying hour. But calling on the name of the Lord is not a one-time event. It’s not to be a single moment of spiritual sanity. It’s a life-giving, life-changing reorientation of our souls to God and his word and promises.

Perhaps this brings you a sense of anxiety or fear. Perhaps you may wonder if you’ve actually called on Jesus’ name in truth. Here is the Good News: Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. We’ll never do it perfectly. We’ll never get it totally right. That’s why we have a Savior: Jesus Christ our Lord.

So call on Jesus’ name. Believe in him. Trust his promises. And live to his glory. Call on him tomorrow in the assembly of his people in worship in whatever mode, language, place, or form you may. If Jesus is the center of your worship you can worship with confidence and hope.
