David Bahn – Reflections

Light from the Word and through the lens

I’ve embraced two different understandings of these parables. Both are worthy explanations. Both embrace profound truths. One centers on the value of the Kingdom of God to man. The other emphasizes the love of God for and value of man to God.

To the Glory of God
The front wall of the commons and roof line takes shape for a building being built for the glory of God.

Matthew 13:44-46

44“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Let’s say the man who finds the treasure is God. He is always on the hunt for things of value. He seeks and saves the lost. He finds, redeems (buys), and treasures his people the church. Let’s say the man who finds the pearl of great value is God. He sells all he has to buy the pearl (you and me)! The price: His own Son – all that he has.

If that is true, then the value of being part of God’s kingdom is greater than any treasure we may want to hold to. If that’s true, it’s worth giving up everything to be part of God’s kingdom.

In truth we must give up everything that is ours to be part of God’s kingdom. For nothing we think we have is ours in the first place. The only thing we actually have is a sinful self-reliance, a smug self-righteousness, and a willful self-determination. When we give these up for the reliance on God, the righteousness of Christ and the direction of God we find that we have lost nothing of any true value and gained something of inestimable value.

“You are precious in my sight and I love you,” says God. (Isaiah 43:4) That truth is worth holding to no matter what today.
