Today we are in Columbus, NE for the interment of Nici’s ashes. Matthew met us yesterday at the Omaha airport and we traveled here together in his rental car. We’re staying in a motel next to the one at which we stayed for their wedding nearly 12 years ago. The graveside will be this morning.

As we drove through Columbus last evening Matt mentioned that it was almost surreal to be here without Nici. This was her home town. When they were here, she would tell him the best routes to take. He never had to think of where he was going. I imagined her saying, “No that that way!” or some other spunky remark. He said it would actually be more like, “Do you want me to drive?!?” In any case one thing Nici had – until her last weeks – was spunk. She was engaged. We are the poorer without her.
Today we end the chapter of our lives with Nici. Although she was cremated last year, because of the frozen earth of Nebraska we waited until now for the burial. Today we will meet the Miceks at the cemetery and have a graveside service in her memory. She rests in the arms of Jesus now. One day we will join her and all the faithful before the throne of the Lamb who won our salvation by his death and resurrection. Thanks be to God for that glorious hope!
