Words are powerful. From the playground bully, to the persuasive politician, to the lover wooing his sweetheart: Words are powerful. When God speaks worlds are created.

Matthew 12:33-37
“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Not only are words powerful, they betray the reality in our hearts. If we are overflowing with words of judgment, accusation, distrust, and disrespect, our heart are shown to be condemned, guilty, anxious, self-consumed. But when Christ rules our hearts by faith our words will season the world with grace, kindness, grace, mercy and truth. This doesn’t happen simply because we try to clean up our act. It happens because Christ’s mercy and love claims our hearts, and his Holy Spirit lives there.
Today is a good day to speak carefully, season our conversations with grace, truth, kindness, and love, and to let the presence of Christ be shown in our speech. Paul’s words apply here:
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:29-32 – ESV)
