Remember the good old days when it was just the “Orange Bowl” or “Sportsman Park” (really old days!), or “The Colonial”? Now it’s “Enron Field” – oops, I guess that’s not right! Or, … well you get my drift. Naming rights are purchased by large companies to get their name in front of the public. It’s all PR, and very expensive PR at that.
Matthew 12:14-21
14But the Pharisees went out and conspired against [Jesus], how to destroy him.
15Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all 16and ordered them not to make him known. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19He will not quarrel or cry aloud,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;
20a bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory;
21 and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”
These words of Isaiah pointed toward Jesus who fulfilled them by his faithful life and ministry. Some companies pay mega-bucks to get their name on a sports facility or to sponsor an event. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice to have his name put on us. It is in his name that we have true hope.
We might root for our favorite team. We may have a special warm spot for a particular stadium. We may even proudly wear the name of a team on our tee shirts. But the name of Jesus is where true hope is found. For his name means, “The Lord saves.” And well he does; only Jesus saves. Only in his name is true hoe to be found.
