Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 11:4-6 (ESV)   And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

Who would ever be offended by Jesus? Not the blind, lame, deaf, and poor. These all were blessed by his ministry. Not the humble and those who need to hear good news. They hang on Jesus’ every word. But if you want to run your own life, don’t wish to acknowledge your sins, or have no brokenness Jesus will surely offend you.

Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Sometimes that’s obvious good news; when we realize we need a Savior, it’s good to know that Jesus is the Savior. On this occasion John needed a Savior. He was in prison. He wondered whether Jesus was the messiah. He was in doubt. He needed help. Had he simply determined to tough it out, to maintain a stiff upper lip, and refused to admit his brokenness the Good News of Jesus would have little impact for him.

But Jesus’ word to John – through his disciples – was Good News indeed. They had the great privilege of bringing hope and life to John. Perhaps you know someone who needs to hear good news. You may well be like John’s disciples: able to go to that person and report what Jesus is doing and has done. Part of that message is a call to humility and hope: “Blessed is the one who is not offended by Jesus.”
