Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 10:5-7

5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

Jesus’ message to the people of Israel through his disciples was, “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” This means that God’s reign in the hearts of people and his rule over all of creation was nearby – only a breath of the Spirit’s work away. God was present among them as the King of kindness, compassion, faithfulness, truth and grace. God’s kingdom is at hand whenever Jesus is present. It is a reality for us when we receive him as Redeemer and Lord.

It is the calling  of every Christian to acknowledge that Christ is present in us and that he rules our hearts. But we so often ignore or forget him. We too easily leave him out of our everyday lives. This is because the sin of most Christians is the more subtle and deadly disease of believing we can get by quite well without God. We’re not given to profligate lifestyles of debauchery and lasciviousness.

We need the reminder daily that Christ reigns over all of life – not just the Sunday morning worship time. We need to hear Jesus’ message just as much as the house of Israel: “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Acknowledge him to be Lord of your life, reigning in your heart today. His reign is one of grace and truth, light and life. Thanks be to God!
