And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

Jesus’ instructions to his disciples on this occasion was to proclaim as they go that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. While this is not the Great Commission, nor is it the most directly-applicable commission for God’s people today, there is a truth for us in this message. God’s kingdom is at hand; God is near. He rules over all. We simply are too often unaware of that.

Sometimes we are distracted from that reality. Amusements, challenges, joys, and troubles become an end in themselves. We forget that God stands behind all things as giver and the One to whom all things belong.

Sometimes we simply refuse to put ourselves under God’s authority. We think we can chart our own course, and pick and choose what is good and what is evil for ourselves. Silly. Misguided. God reigns above all.

But the Good News of the Kingdom of God is that God’s reign in Christ is not just a reign of power and sovereignty. His is a reign of grace, mercy, truth, and love. This message is not a warning, but an invitation. We are to watch for God’s impact and involvement in the everyday affairs of life. The kingdom of God is at hand. God’s favor and blessings are being manifest in Jesus Christ in God’s people as we live, love, forgive, give, and serve in Christ’s name.

Where do you see God’s kingdom breaking into your world? How will you bring that reality with you today as you go?
