Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 9:27-31

And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying,  “According to your faith be it done to you.” 30And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

Two blind men cry out for mercy. Jesus asks them if they believe he can help them. They say yes. He heals them. A simple story to be sure. But look closer: the key is their faith. Jesus says, “According to your faith be it done to you.”

The faith of these men is shown by three distinct actions on their part. They follow along after Jesus “crying aloud, ‘Have mercy on us, Son of David.’” They come to Jesus after he enters the house. They acknowledge that Jesus has the power to heal them. They call out; the persist; they confess.

Faith is a wonderful thing. It’s strength is not only within us, but also within its object. Had these men expressed this kind of faith to a scam artist they would have been disappointed, not healed. But they call out to Jesus as “Son of David.” They realized that he was no con man. “Son of David” expresses a faith in and of itself: they knew Jesus was not just Mary and Joseph’s son.

Often we may feel more like the father who said to Jesus, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24) But when our faith rests in Jesus, Son of David it will be strong. His fame must be spread throughout the earth.
