Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 8:18-20

18Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

We can understand this scribe’s enthusiasm. Jesus is healing diseases. He is gathering a band of brothers. His fame is spreading. Crowds are gathering around him. He is on a mission. So when the scribe invites himself to follow Jesus, it is in the middle of an groundswell of excitement and anticipation: What will Jesus do next?

Jesus’ response to this earnest scribe is a challenge to any would-be disciple motivated only by the fervor of the moment to follow Jesus. He offers a look into the reality of his mission. His will not be an easy road. He has no place to rest his head. The path to the other side is not a path to a palatial retreat, nor even a cabin in the woods. He truly has miles to go before he sleeps.

Tacitly Jesus is asking whether the scribe really does want to sign-on for a tour of such austere duty and naked faith. Jesus will rely on the Father’s provision, and so will his disciples. The way is prepared for him. The heavenly Father will draw people to him. Jesus will literally  walk by faith, and so will those who follow him. Where will Jesus lay his head? Jesus will lie down in the homes of those who receive him and believe his message.

It is no different today: Jesus rests in the hearts of believers. That is his joy and our blessing. There may be times when it seems exciting and appealing to follow Jesus. But Jesus wants a resting place in our hearts not only in the pleasant places, but also in the sturm und drang of life. He belongs there, and we are truly blessed when he rests in our hearts by faith.
