Matthew 8:14-17
And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

A recent prayer vigil at St. John was sponsored by our daughter church, LifeBridge Church. Between 150 and 200 people gathered to pray for Layla Grace, a little girl who is suffering from a dreadful disease. The prognosis is not good; there is little medical hope. But we have prayed for her; I hope you will add her to your prayer list as well.
One person said that Layla did not “fall through the cracks” of God’s love and care. God did not turn his back on her. We live in a fallen world. Death is part of our earthly existence. Sometimes – in order that we might see God’s glory and recognize a greater truth – God heals people miraculously. Sometimes – in order that we might learn patience and deepen our prayers – God heals people mercifully, taking them from this vale of tears into his presence. One day we will all be healed perfectly. When this “perishable puts on the imperishable and this mortal puts on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:52-54).
All this is possible because Jesus has taken on himself our illnesses and diseases. He took them into his being and consumed them by his grace. On the Great Last Day we will stand perfectly and eternally haled in Christ and we will serve him with joy and thanks and praise in our hearts.
There will come a restoration to perfect health. There will be an answer to every prayer for healing. When it comes what will be our response?
