Matthew 8:11-12
[Jesus said,] “I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

These words are good news for you and me; we are those of whom Jesus is speaking in these words. Most of us who are reading this will come from the west to recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
But lest we miss the point of Jesus’ words toward “the sons of the kingdom” we need to take the rest of Jesus’ words to heart. This is a grave warning to those who think they have a place in God’s kingdom and presume upon God – as though he owes us, or that we are entitled to something from him. If we think that there are a chosen few who get it and the rest are simply lost have forgotten that we are all interlopers before God.
This is a stark warning: there is a place of outer darkness. There is weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth in that terrible, God-forsaken place. No one should want to go there. But it is not just because it is a terrible place. The greater motivation is the hope of reclining at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; that is a glorious place!
