Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 7:7-12

[Jesus says,] “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

9“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Most take these words to be an encouragement for our prayers. We are to keep knocking, seeking, and asking because those who do so will be answered.  Indeed we are to pray with fervency. God is good. He will give good gifts to those who ask him. Even evil men give good gifts to their children. How much more will our good and gracious heavenly Father give good gifts to us!

But Jesus’ conclusion here reaches farther than an encouragement to pray.  “So,” he says, “in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

This so-called “Golden Rule” is not only a good guide for how we treat others, it is also an outgrowth our our prayers and faith in a good and gracious heavenly Father. If God is good (and he is), and if we keep praying (which we will), and if God will give good gifts to those who ask him (which he will), then we are freed from self-absorbed self-protection and self-preservation. God will take care of us. We can be good to others. We can do for them as we would wish they do to us. That is a product of God’s goodness in the hearts of God’s people.
