Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 107:1

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

The goodness of God is on display in Haiti just now – even in the wake of the terrible Haiti earthquake. People from all over the world are coming to the aid of the Haitian people. Christians are leading the way, but people of other faiths, and even atheists are joining in the efforts.

This testifies to the goodness of God: for God is the author of every good thing. Where else does goodness come from? Who else can determine what is good or what is evil? Why is there nearly universal agreement that to help these people so terribly impacted by the earthquake? Because God is good and his moral nature is imprinted in the soul of every man, woman and child of this earth.

There is plenty of evil in Haiti: looters, those who disregard others in search of their own well-being; death due to poor workmanship and corruption of government and construction people; profiteering; voodoo charlatans; atheistic naysayers abound.

But the milk of human kindness flows from the hearts of those who have been nurtured on the goodness of God and the grace of Christ. The Holy Spirit moves God’s people to acts of kindness and compassion.

We confess that God is good. Let our actions reflect that today – whether responding to the Haiti earthquake or the server who hands you your coffee.
