Light from the Word and through the lens

John 16:20

You will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy.

Sometimes we are so overcome with emotions that we cannot hold back their expression. Sometimes we weep out loud because the pain is so great. Sometimes we burst into laughter because the joke is so funny. Many times, however, we keep our deeper feelings to ourselves. We don’t want to be controlled by our emotions. Or worse yet, we don’t want others controlling us because they know what our emotions are.

There will come a time, however, when the sheer joy of our salvation, the justification of Christ, and the vindication of righteousness will so overwhelm us that we will burst forth in song and praise. This is what is described in the book of Revelation, and what Jesus is speaking of in these verses. There will be a time when we will be “surprised by joy.”

While we struggle here on earth, and especially in those times when life is not pleasant, we might lose sight of the hope that is ours. But God never loses sight of His hope (no faint wishing here!) for us. And when the time comes for us to experience that joy fully, we will rejoice deeply. We may even be surprised. But what better surprising joy can there be than the eternal joy of God’s redemption? Born in a stable, laid in a manger, the hopes and dreams of all the years are met in Jesus. He is our source of true, great and surprising joy.

We celebrate that joy today.
