Light from the Word and through the lens

2 Timonthy 4:8

And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

The seeds are ready to be scattered by the breezes. The plants will soon appear.

So often our hearts are set on lesser goals. We want a raise. We look forward to our child’s graduation. We anticipate a special vacation. These things may be perfectly proper desires. But if “good enough” is the enemy of “great” these hopes may well battle against the more perfect hope that God holds out to us in Christ.

Perhaps you’ve even thought that you would be ready for Jesus to appear after your child’s performance. You’re ready for the end of the world if it would come after you’ve seen the Grand Canyon. Once you’ve filled your “bucket list” it would be OK to die; not before! Most of us don’t live with a deep longing for Jesus’ imminent return. Only when we are in miserable situations do we easily yearn for Jesus’ presence.

But Jesus comes to us each day – in His word, in the brother or sister in Christ whom we encounter, in the sacrament of the altar. His impact in our lives when we look for Him today reaches into eternity. Through Him there is a crown of righteousness that is stored up for us who rejoice in His presence and grace each day.

When we fully understand Jesus’ blessings we will long for His appearing – in word, and sister or brother, and on the Great Last Day. Then every eye will see Him and every knee will bow before Him and proclaim: “Jesus Christ is Lord!” to the glory of God the Father. Those who do so by the grace of the Holy Spirit truly do long for and will delight in His appearing.
