1 Corinthians 15:55-58 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

“We were never meant to die.” These words, spoken by Cindy Newkirk last night are a stunning reminder. Death is an aberration; it’s not what we were created for. Cindy writes a daily devotion grounded in God’s word and lived and worked out in her family vineyard in Paso Robles, California. I receive her “Newk-IT! Reflection” daily. She has a profound way of connecting life in Christ with her experiences and learnings in the vineyard. No wonder: Jesus did say, “I am the vine. You are the branches.”
If we are to be steadfast, immovable, and always abounding in the work of the Lord, we must be deeply and strongly connected to the vine: Jesus Christ. In Him, we not only bear fruit (never in vain), but we bear fruit that will last (John 15:16). We are told that those who die in the Lord are blessed, that their works follow them (Revelation 14:13).
The greatest freedom we have is freedom from death and eternal condemnation by Jesus’ death and resurrection. In that freedom we give ourselves wholly to the work of the Lord. Our efforts in him are never in vain. What are you doing today to abound in the work of the Lord – knowing that such work will span the breadth of eternity?
Prayer: You have won the victory, O Lord – and you give me that victory through faith. Help me to abound in your work, knowing that my labor in you, Lord Jesus, is never in vain. Help me to give freely in support of your kingdom with that same confidence. Amen.
