Light from the Word and through the lens

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.    (New Living Translation)

Hibiscus Blossom
This beautiful hibiscus blossom is but one of millions of God's creative works.

Most often when I think of someone proclaiming themselves as a masterpiece I think of someone with an over-inflated ego; a self-promoting over-estimation of his own influence and importance. Not a pleasant person to be around.

On the other end of the spectrum are those who have such an underestimated sense of worth that they refuse to engage anyone in conversation or relationship. They offer nothing of themselves and have no impact of grace in the world.

A proper balance of humility and praise to God is our calling as God’s people in Christ Jesus. The Psalmist says it well, “I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made!” (Psalm 139:14) The balance is between letting our light shine and making certain that we are shining the light of Christ, not parading ourselves in a false show of self-aggrandizement. It is keeping our ego in check while still manifesting the handiwork of God in our lives.
We have been shaped by God for blessing – our own and others’. But we won’t be the blessing we were created to be if we do not keep God’s masterful work in our lives in mind and serve God and neighbor in the unique manner that each of us is masterfully created for.

Prayer:    You are the Master-Craftsman, O God! By your grace and favor I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Help me to use all that I am and all that you have made me to be to serve you and my neighbor. Give me an opportunity to do so today; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
