2 Corinthians 4:5-7
For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

“You’ve got to toot your own horn once in a while.” The comment came as a surprise to me from a relative whose horn, it seemed to me, didn’t really need tooting all that much; he was a giant already in my eyes. But there are times, it seems, that we must promote ourselves.
But those times never have to do with the cause of God’s kingdom. Jesus said that there was no greater man alive than John the Baptist. But John’s judgment was, “He must increase, I must decrease.” The truly great men and women of the world are those who, like Mary, say, “I am the Lord’s servant. Be it to me as you say.” Again: we never need to toot our own horn for the cause of Christ’s kingdom.
This is a good reminder for those who occasionally want to assert their rights or make a name for themselves even in the noblest of causes. If I want to be well known so that my church can grow, or we can have a larger impact in the community, I’ve got it wrong. Better to serve in obscurity if the name of Christ is honored.
But this is no cause to hide our light under a bowl. We are not called to fade into the darkness. Because the light of Christ’s love has shone into our hearts, we have the knowledge of Jesus Christ. He is someone who is eternally, cosmically, and ontologically famous. Too many people dismiss him. Too few know the light of his love.
Let your light shine today! Let your family, friends, coworkers, neighbors – even your enemies! – see the love of Christ in you. He’s the one who needs to be famous!
