Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 6

1“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Can we talk? To be quite honest, I really do like it when people complement me. So when Jesus says this morning that we should beware of practicing our righteousness before people in order to be seen by them He’s speaking to me. Maybe Jesus is speaking to you, too. But I know He is speaking to me.

There is a fine line between letting your light shine so that others may see your good works and give praise to your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16), and practicing your righteousness before men to be seen by them. As a professional “God’s man” it is very difficult to make the point with your life and not become the center of attention in doing so. But that is my calling.

It is your calling too. Maybe you can make a point of doing what you do so that the credit goes to God, and that your reward will come from your Father who is in heaven. Then you can pray from your heart, “Hallowed be your name, heavenly Father, Hallowed be Your name. Amen.”

That would be a good prayer for both of us to pray – today and every day.
