Matthew 4:5-10
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
7Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”

Scripture is flying everywhere. The devil uses it to get Jesus to go along with his ways. Jesus counters with other Scriptures that speak against the devil’s temptations. Who’s right here? How do you tell?
There are plenty of people quoting Scripture for plenty of reasons these days. One simple test: are these people seeking to bring you to the foot of the cross and to Jesus, or are they trying to give you a pass, or offer a new and different way of religion? Are they using a single verse for their own benefit, or are they using the whole counsel of God? Are they making one verse king for all the others, or are they making the message of Jesus Christ, crucified and risen to be the touchstone of all other things?
We must allow God’s word to speak into our lives and shape us. This calls for humility and the Holy Spirit. God grant that to me this day! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
