Galatians 6:14 (ESV)
But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
What is your center? Where do you go to find comfort, hope, peace, and life? Some turn to hard work. Some amass great wealth. Some search out the greatest extreme experience. Others turn to drugs, alcohol or other addictions. These are not worthy pursuits – especially for the life of God. That comes only in the cross of Jesus Christ.
Today may bring several opportunities to center your life in less than excellent pursuits. We will each be offered an easy out of some sort – a shortcut to success that involves a bypass of God’s greater blessing.
The key reason to hope only in the cross is not for masochistic reasons. This is not a call to feel bad and keep joy from our hearts. We don’t look to the cross so that we don’t get our hopes up. We look to the cross because it is the testimony of God’s great love for us, and the symbol of the greatest victory ever won in the history of the world.
In the cross of Jesus, faith, faithfulness, godliness, grace, love, and redemption are exalted. Jesus endured the cross “for the joy set before him.” He endured these pains – even being abandoned by God – without losing faith in the Father. And because of Jesus’ faithful suffering He has been exalted and given the name that is above every name.
I’ll boast in the cross of Jesus because it is His victory over sin and death; and gift to the world.
