Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 107 is one of my favorites – especially because of the unchanging truth of verse 1:

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!  – Psalm 107:1 [ESV]

God is good – all the time – and His love endures for ever, never failing always sustaining. Because of this, we are commanded to give thanks to Him; not just because of the blessings we receive, but because of His goodness and love in all situations, good and bad.

The Psalm speaks of times in the life of Israel when they forgot God, rebelled against Him, disobeyed His commands, or suffered calamity. In each of these cases they turned to God, called out to Him and sought His help. In every case the Lord answered them and delivered them. This Psalm is about God’s faithfulness and salvation. How he fills the hungry with good things and rescues the poor from their distress.

In the end he says, “Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.” – Psalm 107:43 [NLT]

The ultimate deliverance of God is in the cross of Christ; it is a costly and eternal deliverance. Indeed those who are wise will take this to heart; they will see in Jesus’ death and resurrection the faithful love of God, and will gather to give thanks to Him.
