LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who may live on your holy hill?
When was the last time you “couldn’t wait” to go to worship? How often do we consider it a privilege to enter into the presence of God? How often do we recognize that it is something for which we must be qualified, and that God has qualified us to enter into His presence? Too often we think we “ought” to go to worship. Too often we think it a duty and a task. David asks a question that reminds us of the privilege that is ours to enter into the Holy of Holies – the very presence of God. It is not something that we could ever imagine doing on our own merit: Who may live on God’s holy hill?
Here is the answer:
He whose walk is blameless
and who does what is righteous,
who speaks the truth from his heart
3 and has no slander on his tongue,
who does his neighbor no wrong
and casts no slur on his fellowman,
4 who despises a vile man
but honors those who fear the LORD,
who keeps his oath
even when it hurts,
5 who lends his money without usury
and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things
will never be shaken.
Maybe on a good day we would qualify here. Fact is we ought to live such a lifestyle; it honors God. But when David says, “who speaks the truth from his heart” we are reminded of the One who is the way, truth, and life: Jesus Christ.
We adorn our church buildings with crosses. That is a reminder that we enter into the presence of God through Jesus. His death for our sins makes it possible for us to encounter God in His house. Next Sunday, consider it the privilege it is to enter into God’s house. And every day do all you can to express outwardly what Christ is for us by faith: our righteousness, hope, and peace.
