God calls us who are servants of the Lord to praise Him. Goes without saying doesn’t it? That’s what we do. Well…sometimes! Hopefully more often than not we do serve Him. But it’s easy to miss the point in two ways with regard to this calling. First of all we think most quickly of pastors and church workers as “those who serve the Lord.” Indeed we do. But so do ushers, choir members, Sunday school teachers, and those who come to worship in order not just to have their own expectations fulfilled. While these words are good reminders to us professional church workers, it is a high calling for all who gather for worship.
Second, it’s easy to idealize such service. Tidy churches: white clapboard, tall steeples, simple religion. More often than not the churches are anything but tidy (not dirty, just not simple and without troubles). No church this side of heaven is without challenge. Few are truly tidy. And those which are not tidy are often that because God is dealing with people in real and important ways, and doing His work in their hearts. That’s seldom simple or tidy.
This cemetery chapel is, perhaps, a reminder of what it means to lift up holy hands in His holy Sanctuary. We do that no matter what form the church building takes whenever we honor God and praise His name.
Psalm 134
A song of ascents.
1 Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD
who minister by night in the house of the LORD.
2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary
and praise the LORD.
3 May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth,
bless you from Zion.
