This friendly brother and his partner offered their music to the New York subway passengers on a cold Tuesday morning. He willingly struck a pose for me and my P/S. In reflecting on this photo – and a bit also about the context of his musical gift to us, it occurred to me that he was doing his thing in his venue – the subway – because that was where he felt at home. A small audience. Little income (he received only a few dollars from the people in the car). But here he is: happy and doing his thing.
I wonder how often we fight against the realities of our calling, and refuse to bloom where we are planted. While there are times when we need to have a holy discontent (emphasis on holy!), there are also times to be still and know that God is God, and that he has you right where he wants you now – or at least is calling you to himself right where you are. Sometimes we simply must say, it is enough for me to be with Jesus, and he with me. It is enough to know that the Holy Spirit is in me and the Father loves me. It is enough for me to serve the people God brings into my life today with the gifts I have received from him.
Why would I say this? Because as Micah 6:8 says, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” God is with us day by day – wherever we are or wherever we may be called. May God guide us to serve Him joyfully wherever he calls us.
