The Cross at Ground Zero
The Cross at Ground Zero

There is a plaque welded to the bottom of this cross that was taken from the wreckage of the World Trade Center twin towers from 9/11. It reads:

THE CROSS AT GROUND ZERO
FOUNDED SEPT. 13, 2001
BLESSED OCT. 14. 2001
TEMPORARILY RELOCATED OCT. 5, 2006
WILL RETURN TO WTC MUSEUM
A SIGN OF COMFORT FOR
ALL

The cross is a comfort in as much as it reminds us of God’s love and redemption. It is a comfort because it is empty, and the tomb in which the Lord who was laid is empty. And our hope is fulfilled in Christ: His cross, His salvation; His empty tomb. Our comfort and stronghold.

I visited Ground Zero in April of 2009. The experience was not as profound as I had imagined it might be. But the cross caught my eye. I’m glad it is there – a reminder, ultimately, of Jesus’ death and our salvation through faith in Him.
